Male-Female Pay Difference Increases .

“Women earn only 69% percent of what men earn”, according to a study by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation.
Maternity, Parenthood, Limitation on the working hours, Limitation on traveling, Discomfort of the males reporting to a female boss, the females choice of looking for a job and not for a career, the preference or compulsion to choose family when there is a conflict between family and work are some of the factors that contribute to this disparity.
Though women score higher than men in every subject, including science and mathematics, most of the organizations are unwilling to compensate them for their superior scholastic performance.
One way females can bridge this gap is to outsource their family commitments such as cooking, cleaning, washing, tutoring etc, so that they can find more time for their career.
The other alternative is to be their own boss. |

Is the Dollar’s steady fall ‘authorised’?
The Sterling Pound which was quoted at around 1.70 to the dollar one year back has breached all resistance and broke the $2 barrier. Economic data does not give any indication that the UK economy is growing stronger and the US economy is growing weaker. Then how is that the dollar is steadily depreciating and the Fed is not intervening?
It seems the Dollar’s steady fall is welcome by the Fed with the tacit approval of the Congress. US is facing a huge trade deficit and a weak dollar could spur the export growth and simultaneously curb the imports
Look at the Thai baht. In just one year it has appreciated more than 20 percent against the dollar despite the fact that the government has gone all out to stem the baht’s rise. It seems wise to go short on dollar in the short term

It doesn’t pay to work for multi-nationals .

Citibank’s decision to cut 17000 jobs and shift 9500 jobs to low-cost locations is not totally unexpected.
A multinational’s mission is profit; not society’s welfare or employee’s welfare.
It is a myth that you have a secured job if you are working for a multi-national.
The moment the decision was announced its stock price went up. We know the correlation. If jobs are cut, expenses will go down, profits will go up.
So it doesn’t pay to work for multi-nationals. It pays to own a portion of the multinationals – in the form of shares.
The real job security lies is enhancing our skills thereby increasing our employability and making ourselves indispensable wherever we work. |

Has Wolfowitz lost his wits?

We have to wait for a couple of days to know whether Wolfowitz will continue as World Bank president or will be ousted.
The accusation that he promoted his girl friend Shaha Riza to a high-paying job is still being investigated.
Whether Wolfowitz will be ousted or leave on his own is a matter of speculation. But it is a fact that he enjoys the confidence of President Bush, as it is he who nominated him for the top job of the top bank.
It’s funny that we are prepared to ignore the fact that Wolfowitz is a former deputy defence secretary who planned the international disaster of US invasion of Iraq but we are gunning for his head for Shaha Riza’s promotion.

Trading in Insurance Policy.

The recent judgment by the Bombay High Court that insurance policies can be assigned to a third party for a price has once again stirred controversy. Some see it as recognizing an individual’s rights. Many are afraid that investors’ will start betting on other peoples lives.
Trading was banned in insurance policies because it violates the basic principle of ‘insurable interest’- ie, the beneficiary of policy must suffer an emotional loss or financial loss. Without insurable interest, it could amount to gambling and violate ethics. Many fear dilution of moral values, because the policies, even if they are assigned to third parties, can be encashed only when the policy-holder dies or meets with an accident.
Though trading in insurance policies is already legal in the US and UK , whether it will suit the Indian society with traditional values, is a question only time can answer. |

eBay's new policy affects sellers.

ebay has changed its listing policy so that now items listed byUK sellers do not appear on the ebay.com when searched on simple search option. One has to find the items listed by UK sellers on the ebay.com site.
Yes, ebay.com Has a right to change its listing policy. But what angers the UKsellers is the fact that they were informed before the change was implemented. Result UK sellers lost a market of nearly 300 million USbuyers.
ebay justification is that in the earlier policy the American sellers did not have access to UK buyers, whereas UK sellers had access to American buyers. ebay claims it has just rectified the flaw.
Let us look at the solution. It is still possible for the UK sellers to get listed on ebay.com by maintaining two separate ebay accounts. Of course one has to pay two listing fees. |

Reverse foreign takeover.

It is sweet news for every Indian that Indian companies are buying out global companies.
After Mittal’s successful takeover of Arcelor, now Birla is bidding Novelis, a Canadian Aluminum company for 6 million dollars. Ranbaxy is bidding for Merck (generics business division) a German pharmaceutical company for 5 billion dollars.
Till now the biggest inflow of foreign exchange into India has been remittances from Indians working abroad. In a couple of years, India will see a substantial increase in inflow of foreign exchange from international companies owned by Indian companies.
India was the most prosperous country in the world before the British invaded it. It is a matter of time before India regains its reputation of being the most prosperous country in the world |
